Interestingly I ran into this picture today… I had just been talking to someone about a book that I had read “Why Zebra Don’t Have Ulcers”. A little preview…
Robert M. Sapolsky’s acclaimed and successful Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers features new chapters on how stress affects sleep and addiction, as well as new insights into anxiety and personality disorder and the impact of spirituality on managing stress.
As Sapolsky explains, most of us do not lie awake at night worrying about whether we have leprosy or malaria. Instead, the diseases we fear-and the ones that plague us now-are illnesses brought on by the slow accumulation of damage, such as heart disease and cancer. When we worry or experience stress, our body turns on the same physiological responses that an animal’s does, but we do not resolve conflict in the same way-through fighting or fleeing. Over time, this activation of a stress response makes us literally sick.
Stress, we as human stress about time, work, children, bills, even entertainment! We get worked up if our favorite team is playing and it’s a close game or doesn’t win. We stress if we are playing a sport and don’t think we done our best. We stress if we are watching a television show and our favorite character is eliminated or killed off of the series.
What do we NOT stress over? Certainly we have reasons to be concerned over life issues. However, there are things in life that we can control and things that we cannot. How many times have you heard that? But really??? It is effecting your health! Do you know what happens when your health is at jeopardy? Your family and friends are also at risk… Driving and have a heart attack with you family in the car? Or friends? Stress about everything? What kind of example is that for your children? I remember my Father saying “I’m just a worrier… My Mother (my grandmother) was a worrier and I guess I got it from her”. Stress nor worrying is hereditary!
Think about how much happier you would be if you took a bit of your current stress load off your plate right now! Realistically no one can go cold turkey off of stress… Think of a couple things that you worry or stress about that you realize there is nothing in this world that you can do to change the outcome, QUIT worrying!!!! Baby steps… This will make space for more enjoyable time 🙂 Healthy time 🙂
There’s a reason it’s called a “Dog’s Life” (at least the pampered ones)… They get to lie around the house all day, no chores, eat, nap, play, repeat…
